Description
This lightweight steel flywheel made by Bastuck weighs only 9.88 lbs (12.5 lbs with ring gear) while the stock flywheel with ring gear weighs approximately 27.25 lbs. Reducing the weight of the flywheel allows the engine to rev faster, increasing throttle response and acceleration. Includes clutch pressure plate bolts, dowel pins and starter shim. Available with the ring gear installed. Does not include flywheel bolts.
Compared to aluminum flywheels, steel flywheels have a more reliable attachment to the crankshaft. Softer material and dissimilar expansion rates of aluminum vs the steel crankshaft make it hard to keep an aluminum flywheel tight on the crankshaft.
This flywheel works well on a race engine where fast rpm changes are needed. For smoother operation in a high performance street application you may prefer our 16.7lb (with ring gear) premium grade lightweight steel flywheel kit (SKU 6346K).
To achieve such light weight, the outer rim and the face of this flywheel are fairly thin. When the ring gear is shrunk onto the rim it causes slight deflection or doming of the face of the flywheel. Most of the doming happens outside of the clutch disc area but it may have slight effect on the clutch disc area also. I have not heard of this causing any problems but to restore a perfectly flat surface the flywheel would need to be ground after installing the ring gear.
Ring gear position with this flywheel is about .090″ closer to the engine than original. A starter shim is included to correct the starter gear engagement. Failure to use a starter shim may result in starter damage due to failure to disengage from the ring gear when the engine starts.
